VolunTour: Riga, Latvia

Volunteer with Palidzesim.lv and enhance children’s lives through team-building activities, arts and crafts, and a picnic.

About Your Trip

On this VolunTour, for ages 8 years and older, to Riga, Latvia, show your Heart to Serve with WorldVentures Foundation™ and the charity organization Palidzesim.lv. Improve the lives of children through important team-building activities, environment and adventure games, arts and crafts, and a shared picnic. VolunTours are professionally planned, guided trips that put volunteers to work beautifying communities, building infrastructure and brightening the lives of children. You will participate in a child-serving project as you become immersed in the culture.

At a Glance:
• Fine art photographers created Palidzesim.lv — Latvian for “we help” — a nonprofit that serves children ages 5 to 15 with mental, behavioral and movement disorders.
• The founders believe that society does not pay adequate attention to everyone in need because many of those people, especially children, are unseen.
• Photographers use their talents to tell the story of each child, family or children’s home, bringing awareness to specific cases. This helps donors find and support those in need, and see how their donations make a difference.

Destination

Established more than 800 years ago, Latvia has a rich and complicated past. It gained independence from the Soviet Union in 1991 and became part of the European Union in 2004. Situated on the Baltic Sea at the mouth of the Daugava River, Latvia’s capital, Riga, has served over time as a major trade hub for central and Eastern Europe. The city has evolved into an international cultural center and was named the “2014 European Capital of Culture” by the European Union.

Riga is known for its numerous historic architectural styles. One of the finest collections of art nouveau buildings is found in its medieval Old Town, an area allocated as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Riga is also home to many well-preserved, 19th-century wooden houses and Gothic-style churches.
